You rubbed your sleeve against your forehead, wiping off the sweat on your temple. You put the apple pie in the oven and grinned in satisfaction. Oh, how you were looking forward to seeing the look on your girlfriend’s face when she’ll take a bite out of that (hopefully) appetizing pie.

You were now watching random episodes on the Discovery Channel, knowing that your matesprit, Aradia, likes to watch her shows on archaeology when she gets home from working at the city’s museum. She had a real passion for archaeology and you knew it quite well. In fact, what got you to meet her was because you both studied archaeology and history together in college. Even though you were more of a historic person, you got along well the same way peanut butter and jelly suit each other. You had been together for over two sweeps – or four years in human terms – and you never regretted the day you asked her out after waiting out in the cold to see her. You ended up getting bronchitis, but you recovered quickly and it was worth it.

Hearing the door open and close, you snapped out of your daydream of memories and turned to face the female troll responsible for the end of your daydream train.

“Welcome home, Aradia.” you greeted, smiling. She smiled softly at you, taking off her shoes and placing them in the corner of the living room, where the other shoes are placed. She went to the couch and sat next to you, holding your hand and kissing your forehead.

“How was your day?” she asked. You smirked slightly in response.

“I could ask you the same day, love.” you chuckled. “You WERE the one who went to work today. But if you’re curious, I haven’t done much. I just did some grocery shopping to fill our fridge for the month. How did you day go?”

She sighed slightly, leaning back against the couch cushion as she glanced up at the ceiling before looking back at you.

“Children… children… and more children.” she said, shaking her head. “Some school from another state came for a field trip and some fourth graders managed to nearly break one of the oldest dinosaur fossils at the museum. Gog, I was about to kill them on the spot for that.”

You gave her a look of sympathy, squeezing her hand gently. This wasn’t the first time she dealt with mischievous children that spelt ‘no good’ and showed that they meant trouble. One time, some sixth graders ended up cracking one of the bones on display at the museum in half, having played with it like a Barbie belonging to their annoying sister. Aradia came home a crying mess, blaming herself for not stopping the boys on time; and you spent the night hugging and reassuring her that it wasn’t her fault. Luckily, she felt better the next day and got the day off from her boss to relax.

“Aradia, there will be days where things don’t go as planned.” you said with a tiny smile. “But tomorrow will be a brighter, more positive day. Hell, maybe you’ll even get a raise!”

“That would be good to get a raise…” Aradia muttered, looking to the side in thought. Before she could say anything, you heard a little tic come from the kitchen. You grinned and stood up, pulling a curious Aradia with you.

“Looks like my little surprise is ready!” you exclaimed excitedly, making her curiosity expand.

“What surprise?”

“You’ll see, come!”

You brought her to the kitchen and sat her down at the table, taking your oven mitts and opening the oven to reveal a well-baked, golden apple pie. The spell of the dessert hit Aradia’s nostrils as she inhaled the scent, sighing quietly and happily to herself.

You took out the pie and placed it on the table, exposing your work. Your lover stared at the pie in amazement, licking her lips in thought of eating a piece of that warm, golden pie.

“You made this? For me?” she said, the treat never leaving her eyesight. Your grin widened, satisfied and happy by her reaction, as you knew how much she loved anything involving apples; it was something she started loving ever since she tried one when she came over to your house during a study session.

“Yup, all for you.” you said, taking off the mitts and placing them on the counter. You went to the cupboards and took out a small plate, fork and napkin; placing them in front of her and going back to take a knife. Going back to the table, you cut into the moist, warm pie and cut out a piece, looking at Aradia with a look meaning, “Pass over your plate”. She held out her plate as you placed the piece on the plate. Glancing at the television screen, she looked back at you with big eyes.

“Can we watch TV as I eat my piece of apple pie?” she asked, giving you a semi-puppy and semi-innocent look. Smiling at her expression, you nodded and walked with her to the living room.

A couple of hours later, you two were still on the couch, cuddling and watching a documentary on the findings of a human skeleton somewhere in the mountains of Austria. The pie in general had already been half-eaten and was in the fridge to reserve for another day, while the plate and utensils were put away; having been washed once finished being used. For now, you were enjoying each other’s company in peace.

You looked at Aradia as she looked at the screen with a focused look on her face. Once the documentary ended and she acknowledged your gaze on her, she turned to you and smiled.

“Enjoyed the apple pie?” you asked. She nodded contently and rested her head on your shoulder.

“It was really good and warm.” she said, snuggling closer to you. “Thank you.”

“Anything for the troll I love.” you said. You looked at each other for a moment before sharing a passionate kiss together. This may have been a plain and simple night, but it was one of the best and a night you would both treasure forever. And it was because of that special at the grocery store.
